High-Priority Projects - Next-Generation Pulping
- Yield-protective pretreatment - Develop an approach to stabilize carbohydrate end-groups toward primary peeling. Develop a better understanding of cellulose dissolution reactions and how they differ in hardwood and softwood.
- Accelerating the Rate of Delignification - Identify and evaluate available catalysts to promote delignification while preserving polysaccharides (substitutes for AQ). Identify and evaluate potential methods to activate lignin for delignification via a higher content of free phenolic hydroxyl groups in lignin and/or decrease in molecular weight of lignin prior to delignification.
- Catalytic Delignification - Determine the composition of the oxidation-resistant lignin. Identify co-oxidants that can work within the existing O2 technology. Identify alternative oxidation catalysts.
- High-Kappa pulp - Improve oxygen delignification selectivity - Identify an inter-stage filtrate treatment process to improve second-stage reactivity and selectivity. Identify a pre-O2 or inter-stage lignin activation chemistry that will improve selectivity.
