SUSTAINABLE FOREST PRODUCTIVITY
Agenda 2020's Sustainable Forest Productivity Task Group drives programs that assure that forests will sustainably supply ample wood to meet the future demands for traditional paper and wood products, as well as new demands for use in biofuels, energy, and bioproducts.
R&D PRIORITY
Develop trees with high growth rates for specific end uses
- Development and sustainable deployment of short-rotation woody crops
- Biotechnology and tree improvement
- Sustainable high-yield forestry systems
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
> Partnered with U.S. Forest Service in selecting research programs in soil fertility, carbon, and nutrients, and wood quality
> Initiated work that led to the Pine Genome Initiative and the American Chestnut Forest Health Initiative
> Encouraged the establishment of the Institute of Forest Biotechnology and its subsequent development of Responsible Use guidelines for biotech trees
