The 2010 Forest Products Industry Technology Roadmap identifies important technology needs for the forest products industry in the following areas:
- Reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions
- Reducing water intake in mills
- Assuring supplies of sustainably-grown wood
- Getting more value from woody biomass
- Enabling new products and product features
- Improving reuse of waste paper and wood products
The Roadmap was developed by Agenda 2020 in partnership with the Department of Energy, IPST at Georgia Tech, and AF&PA. It represents the contributions of more than 100 industry experts from around the world who partcipated in two workshops, one to identify the critical issue areas and one to define the R&D needs.
SCORECARD OF ROADMAP PROGRESS - October 2012 Update
The status of the R&D objectives in the Roadmap was reviewed by Agenda 2020 President Ron Brown at the TAPPI PEERS Conference in October, 2012. The presentation (click to download) noted that three of the 23 objectives had a high level of progress and nine had a medium level. Six of the top seven priorities rated high or medium.
Agenda 2020 updates the critical research needs in its platform areas every year through its task groups, and anticipates a new roadmap every five years.

The 2006 Forest Products Industry Technology Roadmap contains research needs of the industry as of 2006. Much of this Roadmap remains current and consistent with the 2010 Roadmap. The social and economic changes since 2006, with more emphasis on sustainability, availability of energy and water, and control of input costs, led to the preparation of the 2010 Roadmap.
