VALUE FROM BIOMASS

Agenda 2020's Value from Biomass Task Group encourages new methods of getting value from wood, including biomass-to-energy, biorefineries integrated with pulp mills, and high-value chemicals.

CURRENT R&D PRIORITIES
Develop new value-added products and chemicals from woody biomass
Develop thermochemical biorefinery processes that are cost-effective for a typical mill

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
> Biomass Research & Development Initiative 2012 selected Agenda 2020's project for a full application, submitted August 3, 2012.  The $4.1 million proposal is led by Agenda 2020 and includes Auburn, U. of Wisconsin, NCASI, and Biofine as partners.  Wood wastes and sludge from pulp and paper mills are feedstocks, and are to be converted catalytically to jet-fuel-ready hydrocarbons.

>Value Prior to Pulping
Agenda 2020 managed the collaborative Value Prior to Pulping (VPP) project in 2007-2010, which evaluated the extraction of hemicelluloses from wood chips before pulping and their conversion to ethanol.  The VPP project involved multiple research providers and multiple company sponsors, and received partial support from the U.S. Department of Energy.

>Black Liquor Gasification
Agenda 2020 encouraged the
DOE-funded analysis of the impact of black liquor gasification on kraft pulp mills by Princeton University, which assessed its positive energy benefits while highilghting the changes in pulping conditions, sulfur recovery, and causticizing associated with the gasification processes.
